2016 Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint Preview, Entries & Odds
OffTrackBetting.com - The G1 Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint goes down this Saturday, November 5 at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California. A group of horses three years old and upward will take to Santa Anita's downhill turf track and race about 6 1/2 furlongs for the winner's share of the $1 million purse.
A full and wide-open field of 14 plus two Alternate Entries will line up in the BC Turf Sprint - race 7 on Santa Anita's Breeders' Cup Saturday card. Post time is 2:05 PM. Here is a peek into the past performances of all 16 possible entries for this G1 stakes.

Pure Sensation 5-1 - defending eighth place finisher - Christophe Clement trained gelding has 18 career starts with seven wins, four seconds and two third place finishes. He enters on a terrific three race win streak - the minor Belmont Turf Sprint Invitational last time out October 8, the G3 Parx Dash July 9 and in the six furlong G3 Jaipur Invitational Stakes at Belmont Park June 11. Before that were two underwhelming results - a fifth in the minor Gulfstream Park Turf in February and an eighth in the 2015 Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint. He also posted a win in the G3 Turf Monster Handicap at this distance last September 7 and an Allowance Optional Claiming score in July. Pure Sensation has been a tad up and down in his career enters this week on fire. He looks for his fourth straight stakes score from the rail Saturday with Kendrick Carmouche in the irons of the tepid morning line favorite.
Obviously 6-1 - multiple G1 winner, Irish bred gelding enters this week on the heels of an OK third in the G2 City of Hope Stakes here October 8. Before that was a nice win in the G3 Poker Stakes at Belmont Park June 18 and two good runner-up finishes - the G2 Arcadia Stakes at Santa Anita February 13 and as favorite with a 104 Beyer Speed Figure in the G2 San Gabriel Stakes here January 2. He also had a ninth in last year's Breeders' Cup Mile, an OK third in the G1 Woodbine Mile last September 13 and 10 months away. Before the layoff was a fifth in the 2014 Breeders' Cup Mile, a fourth in the G2 Del Mar Handicap in August, 2014 and two straight graded stakes scores - the G1 Shoemaker Mile in June, 2014 and the G3 American Stakes in May of that year - he won both of those races two straight years. Obviously now has 28 career starts with 12 wins, six seconds and four third place finishes and has placed in four straight ahead of this weekend. He leaves from gate 2 with Flavien Prat aboard the OK second betting choice.

Celestine 8-1 - Bill Mott trained filly has six wins, two seconds and two third place finishes in 13 career starts. She had a nice four race win streak last summer - the minor Wild Applause Stakes June 14 after wins in the minor Wait a While Stakes in May (both results at Belmont Park) and the minor Sanibel Island Stakes last March at Gulfstream. She had another two race win streak this year - the G1 Just a Game Stakes June 11 at Belmont Park and in wire-to-wire fashion in the G2 Honey Fox Stakes at Gulfstream April 2. Last time out was a bit of a step back however - a third in the G1 First Lady Stakes at Keeneland October 8. Celestine has placed in 10 of her last 11 starts, has looked great in training ahead of this weekend and will be after her third graded stakes score in her last four starts. Joel Rosario rides from the outside gate 14.
Washington DC 8-1 - Irish bred Aidan O'Brien trained colt has placed in 12 of 15 career starts - four wins, seven seconds and a third place finish. He arrives on the heels of consecutive runner-up finishes in Europe - the Group 1 Qatar Prix de l'Abbaye de Longchamp October 2 and the Group 2 Flying Five Stakes at Curragh September 11. Before that was a seventeenth in the Nunthorpe Stakes at York in August, a second in the Group 2 King George Stakes July 29 and a fifth in the Group 1 July Cup July 8. Washington DC has been OK but will be looking for his first win since May (7 races) when he leaves from gate 8 with Ryan Moore in the reins.
A Lot 8-1 - Chad Brown trained colt had three good runner-up finishes in graded stakes action in 2015 - the G3 Dania Beach Stakes in January, the G2 American Turf Stakes in May and the G2 National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame Stakes in August and has been up and down since. Last time out was an OK second in the G1 Fourstardave Handicap at Saratoga August 20 after a fourth in the G3 Jaipur Invitational Stakes at Belmont Park June 11, a good win in the minor Elusive Quality Stakes on that track in August, a seventh in the G3 Tampa Bay Stakes in February and a pair of thirds in minor stakes action this past winter. He has placed in 11 of his last 13 starts overall and arrives in decent form. He tries for his first graded stakes score Saturday from post 9 with Javier Castellano aboard.
Suedois 10-1 - French bred David O'Meara trained gelding makes his North America debut Saturday having posted six wins, eight seconds and four third place finishes in 25 career starts. He won the Group 3 Prix de Meautry Barriere in August, 2015 but hasn't posted a victory since. He enters off consecutive thirds - the Group 1 Prix de la Foret at Chantilly October 2 and the Group 1 32red Sprint Cup September 3 after a fourth, a second and a fifth in Group 1 races in the summer. He has placed in five of seven starts ahead of this weekend ad will be out to snap an eight race losing streak from post 7. Daniel Alexander Tudhope gets the call.
Ambitious Brew 10-1 - Martin Jones trained gelding was second in the 2014 G3 Eddie D Stakes and followed that with a seventh in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint that year. He has been decent since - a win last time out in this year's Eddie D Stakes last time out on this track September 30 followed a fourth in the G2 Del Mar Mile August 21, a second in the minor California Dreamin' Stakes July 24, a sixth in the G1 Triple Bend Handicap at Santa Anita June 25, a win in the minor Lennyfromalibu Stakes at Santa Anita May 28, a sixth in the minor California Flag Stakes in October and a nice win in the minor EB Johnston Stakes at Los Alamitos last September. He chases his second straight graded stake score Saturday having placed in four of his last six starts - OK form. Mike Smith has the mount from gate 10.
Holy Lute 10-1 - James Cassidy trainee has 27 career starts with six wins, six seconds and three third place finishes. He enters in career-best form - a win in the G3 Eddie Read Stakes on this track last time out September 30 followed an Allowance Optional Claiming score at Del Mar August 31. He failed to place in his previous four starts including an eleventh in the G3 Daytona Stakes on this track in December. Holy Lute had been disappointing before finding another gear in his last two starts and will try to build on those efforts from post 13 with James Theriot in the saddle.
Undrafted 12-1 - finished second in this race in 2014 and third last year but has been up-and-down since. Last time out was a sixth in the G3 Woodford Stakes at Keeneland October 8 which followed a fourth in the minor Kentucky Downs Turf Sprint September 3, a third in the minor Lucky Coin Stakes at Saratoga in July, a sixth in the Group 1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes in England in June (a race he won in 2015) and a good win in the G2 Shakertown Stakes at Keeneland in April. Undrafted has been just OK lately but seems to show up in BC races. He looks for his first win in 16 months when he departs from post 11 with John Velazquez guiding him.
Om 12-1 - has 14 career starts for trainer Dan Hendricks with five wins, three seconds and three third place finishes. He enters off two straight runner-up finishes - the G2 City of Hope Mile here October 8 and the G2 Del Mar Mile August 21. Before that was a sixth in the G1 Frank E. Kilroe Mile March 12 at Santa Anita, a third in the G2 Arcadia Stakes here February 13, a nice win in the G2 Mathis Brothers Mile December 26, another third as favorite in the G1 Hollywood Derby here November 28 and two good wins - the G2 Twilight Derby October 24 and in gate-to-wire fashion in the G2 Del Mar Derby last September 6. He also posted a second as favorite in the G3 La Jolla Handicap August 9, 2015 a third in his graded stakes debut - the G3 Affirmed and a dominating 2 1/4 length Allowance Optional Claiming score at Santa Anita in May if last year. Om is one of two horses to ever beat American Pharoah - by 7 1/4 lengths back last August and has been decent in the lead-up to this race. He tries for his first win this year from gate 12 with Gary Stevens aboard from gate 12.
Mongolian Saturday 12-1 - last year's Eclipse Award finalist for Male Sprinter is the defending champion in this race. He also finished second in a pair of graded stakes races at the end of 2015. He wasn't great after his BC triumph, failing to place in his next four starts including an eleventh in the Group 1 Darley July Cup in Britain July 9, a ninth in the Group 1 Kings Stand Cup at Ascot in June, a ninth in a Group 1 in Hong Kong and a fifth in the Group 1 Hong Kong Sprint in December. Last time out however was a terrific bounce back - a nice win in the G3 Woodford Stakes at Keeneland October 8. Mongolian Saturday has been a tad tough to figure out but arrives for his title defense off his best effort in a year. Carlos Montalvo has been tabbed with building on that effort from post 3 Saturday.
Home of The Brave 12-1 - Irish bred Hugo Palmer trained colt has four wins, three seconds and a third place finish in 12 career starts. He makes his North American debut Saturday off a second in the Group 2 Hungerford Stakes at Newbury August 13, another second in the Group 2 Qatar Lennox Stakes at Goodwood July 26 and a two race win streak - the Group 3 John of Gaunt Stakes in May and the King Richard II Stakes in April. Home of The Brave has been competitive in all four starts this year and hopes to be again Saturday from gate 4. James Doyle rides.
Karar 15-1 - British bred Francis-Henri Graffard trained colt has 12 career starts with three wins, four seconds and a third place finish. He makes his North America debut Saturday off a second in the G1 Qatar Prix de la Foret at Chantilly October 2, a third in the Group 3 Prix du Pin Stakes on that track September 8 a seventh in a Group 3 at Deauville August 28 and two straight Allowance scores in the summer. Karar has been competitive lately and will be after his first Group/Graded Stakes win from post 5. Gregory Benoist gets the call.
Calgary Cat 20-1 - 2014 outstanding sprinter in Canada has been up and down the last two years - 10 wins, two seconds and two third place finishes in 18 starts. He enters off his best result in some time - a win in the G2 Nearctic Stakes at Woodbine October 16 after struggling in his previous two starts - a fourth in the minor Ontario Jockey Club Stakes here September 11 followed a fifth in the minor Troy Stakes at Saratoga August 20. Before that was an OK third in the G3 Bold Venture Stakes July 23, a nice win by 1 1/2 lengths in the minor Achievement Stakes June 18, a third in an Allowance Optional Claiming May 21, an eighth in the G2 Kennedy Road Stakes in November and a second in the 2015 Bold Venture. He also had an impressive minor stakes scores here - the Ontario Jockey Club Stakes last August and the Achievement Stakes in July - he also won the 2014 G2 Kennedy Road Stakes. Calgary Cat now has 12 wins, four seconds and three third place finishes in 27 career starts and arrives in so-so form. Luis Contreras has been tabbed to ride from gate 6.
Lady Shipman 12-1 - Alternate Entry - Kiaran McLaughlin trained filly has 13 wins, two seconds and two third place finishes in 20 career starts. She finished fifth last time out in the G3 Eddie D Stakes here September 30 after wins in four of her previous five starts including the minor Turf Amazon Stakes two back at Parx, the G3 Royal North Stakes at Woodbine July 31 and the minor The Very One Stakes at Pimlico in May.
Green Mask 15-1 - Alternate Entry - Brad Cox trained gelding has 19 career starts with four wins, five seconds and three third place finishes. He finished third in this race last year and looked just OK after that. He has placed in four straight ahead of this week however - a third last time out in the minor Belmont Turf Sprint Invitational October 8 followed an Allowance Optional Claiming score in September and consecutive seconds including the G2 Highlander Stakes at Woodbine July 3.
