Happy New Year everyone! While the rest of the world seemingly took a few days off over the holidays, the world of horse racing kept on truckin'! There were no less than six graded stakes races that were contested over the last week with most of the action taking place at Santa Anita where there were five stakes races run. Let's break down all the action and take a glimpse into the horses that ended 2012 in style.
Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach Florida will be the scene of the Grade 3 Mr. Prospector Stakes this Saturday, December 29. Horses three years old and upward will be featured as they dash six furlongs on Gulfstream's dirt track in search of their share of the $100,000 purse.
The Grade 3 Robert J. Frankel Stakes comes our way this Sunday, December 30 from Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California. Fillies and mares three years old and upward will be featured as they go one and one eighth miles on Santa Anita's turf track in search of their share of the $150,000 purse.
The Grade 3 Daytona Stakes is on tap for this Saturday, December 29 from Santa Anita. Horses three years old and upward will be featured as they go 6 1/2 furlongs on Santa Anita's hillside turf course for their share of the $100,000 purse.
Santa Anita Race Track opens for its winter meet, ready to host some of the best thoroughbreds in the business, this Wednesday, December 26. The schedule for the day includes two Grade 1 races - the first being the Malibu Stakes, a seven furlong dash on Santa Anita's dirt track for three year olds looking for the winner's share of the $300,000 purse.
The Grade 1 La Brea Stakes in on tap for this Wednesday, December 26 from Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California. A nice purse of $300,000 will be on the line for three year old fillies willing to go seven furlongs on Santa Anita's main track.
The Grade 2 Sir Beaufort Stakes comes our way from Santa Anita this Wednesday, December 26. Three year olds will be featured as they go one mile on Santa Anita's turf track in search of the winner's share of the $150,000 purse.
The Road to the Kentucky Derby takes the rest of 2012 off - the CashCall Futurity this past weekend marked the last race in which horses could gain points toward qualification this year. Todd Pletcher colt Violence became the latest to join the top of the standings with a victory in that race with Fury Kapcori, Den's Legacy and Oxbow also picking up valuable points. Keep in mind the top 20 points earners ahead of the Kentucky Derby will gain automatic berth into the Spring Classic.
The 2012 racing season is coming to a close and for one North American track; Sunday marked the end of yet another exhilarating year of graded stakes action at Woodbine while the last graded stakes race of the year went down at Betfair Hollywood Park. Hollywood Park hosted two huge races on Saturday including one of the "Road to the Kentucky Derby" points races - the CashCall Futurity and Woodbine saw its last action of 2012 with the Valedictory on Sunday. The Grade 3 Valedictory Stakes is on tap for Woodbine Race Track in suburban Toronto this Sunday, December 16 - the final day of the Ontario and Canadian racing seasons. Horses three years old and upward will be after their share of the $100,000 purse when they go 1 3/4 miles on Woodbine's main track.
