Proxy on `Go' for 2023 Pegasus World Cup
JAN 21 - Godolphin LLC's Proxy, winner of Churchill Downs' Grade 1 Clark in his last start on Nov. 25, had his final tune up for next Saturday's $3 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1) presented by Baccarat at Gulfstream Park, breezing five furlongs at Fair Grounds Saturday morning. If the five-furlong move in 1:01.80 wasn't quite as eye-catching as his previous two workouts, that was by design.
Working by himself at the New Orleans track, Proxy was clocked tooling a half-mile in 49.40 to the wire under regular exercise rider Arturo Aparicio. The 5-year-old campaigner continued on to the seven-eighths pole, but since that gallop out was so strong, it was classified as a five-furlong work, said trainer Mike Stidham.
"The two important works were the last two," Stidham said by phone from New Orleans. "This was important, but we weren't looking for anything special. We were just looking for maintenance here. He handled it well. He always is a big gallop-out horse, and the best part of the work was the finish and the gallop out. That's what we were looking for, and we got it. He cooled out well, and all is a go as of right now."
Eclipse Award-winning jockey Joel Rosario will be back aboard for the third straight race. Proxy will ship Sunday evening to Gulfstream Park, arriving Monday.
The Clark was Proxy's first stakes victory of any kind, though he'd never been worse than fourth in eight prior stakes attempts. It also came in his first Grade 1 appearance.
"Certainly, I feel like the Pegasus is going to come up tougher overall, a tougher race, so we have to pick our game up from the Clark," Stidham said. "I don't think we can run the same race we ran in the Clark and expect to win. I think we need to do a little bit better, and I'm hoping my horse will move forward from the Clark. That's what we need to see.
"He's had plenty of time from the Clark. He's done well here at the Fair Grounds since that race. He'll get to Gulfstream Monday, and he'll have time to settle in. Barring any issues between now and then, we're ready to go."
Proxy brings a versatile running style into the 1 1/8-mile Pegasus. He's won on the lead; pushed the tepid pace in the Clark before taking command late over the front-running favorite West Will Power; and he's prevailed as a closer.
"Last time there wasn't a lot of speed in the Clark," Stidham said. "Rosario had ridden West Will Power before and obviously knew him well, so we felt like we needed to stay in striking distance of that horse. Now, in a race like this at Gulfstream, more of a speed-favoring type surface, I'd imagine there's going to be a considerable amount more speed, which should put us in a spot somewhere mid-pack, is my guess. With a rider like Rosario, I'm certainly not going to have much to say to him other than good luck and get the best trip you can.
"He's shown he can do either (style). If they're really going fast, he can sit back and finish into fast fractions. If the pace isn't too hot, he can lay in a close stalking position. It's going to depend on how the race sets up and where Joel thinks is the best spot for him to be."
With Proxy being a son of Godolphin's Include mare Panty Raid - a Grade 1 winner on turf and synthetic and Grade 2 winner on dirt - Stidham acknowledged toying with the idea of switching to the turf a while back. After all, Panty Raid's older daughter Micheline was strictly turf, winning four stakes and narrowly losing a Grade 1.
"When things weren't panning out like we had hoped with Proxy, where he was not quite getting it done, the subject came up," Stidham said. "(Godolphin's) Dan Pride and Michael Banahan both said, `hey, we need to exhaust all dirt options before we go to the grass, because obviously to make a stallion these days, you've got to win Grade 1s on the dirt.' That was exactly what we did. Turf obviously came up, but it wasn't an option yet - and I'm glad we didn't."
Pegasus World Cup 2023: Cyberknife, Defunded, Proxy lead invitees
JAN 4 - Cyberknife, Defunded and Proxy top the first invitational list for the Grade 1, $3 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational on Jan. 28 at Gulfstream Park.
The first invitation list includes 12 of North America's older horses, as well as a list of eight reserve invitees.
Cyberknife, a multiple Grade 1 stakes-winning son of 2018 Pegasus World Cup champion Gun Runner, was among the most prominent 3-year-olds of the 2022 racing season, during which the Kentucky-bred colt won the Arkansas Derby (G1) at Oaklawn and the Haskell Invitational (G1) at Monmouth Park. He most recently finished second in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile at Keeneland, in which he finished a head behind winner Cody's Wish.
Cyberknife, who is scheduled to make his final career start in the Pegasus before embarking on a stallion career, is trained by Brad Cox, who saddled Knicks Go for a victory in the 2021 Pegasus World Cup before the 2021 horse of the year's second-place finish last year behind Life Is Good.
Hall of Famer Bob Baffert, who saddled Arrogate for a Pegasus World Cup triumph in 2017, trains Defunded, a 4-year-old gelded son of Dialed In, who closed out the 2022 season with victories in the Awesome Again (G1) at Santa Anita and Native Diver (G3) at Del Mar.
Proxy, a 5-year-old son of Tapit, earned Grade 1 credentials in his 2022 finale in the Clark (G1) at Churchill Downs. The Godolphin homebred is trained by Michael Stidham.
White Abarrio, Get Her Number, Art Collector, Super Corinto and O'Connor are other Grade 1 or Group 1 winners on the invitational list for the Pegasus World Cup.
Saffie Joseph Jr.-trained White Abarrio has the distinction of being a Grade 1 winner at 1 1/8 miles over the main track at Gulfstream Park, having captured the Florida Derby (G1) in April. The 4-year-old son of Race Day, who also won the Holy Bull (G3) at Gulfstream, most recently finished third in the Cigar Mile (G1) at Aqueduct, beaten a half-length by winner Mind Control.
Peter Miller-trained Get Her Number, who captured the 2020 American Pharoah at Santa Anita, was Grade 1 stakes-placed twice in 2022, including a runner-up finish in the Cigar Mile, finishing a half-length ahead of White Abarrio.
Bill Mott-trained Art Collector, who captured the 2021 Woodward (G1) at Belmont, successfully defended his Charles Town Classic (G2) title this year.
Amador Sanchez-trained Super Corinto and Joseph-trained O'Connor were both Group 1 winners in Chile this year who have been victorious at Gulfstream.
Joseph is also represented on the Pegasus World Cup invitation list by Skippylongstocking, the third-place finisher in the 2022 Belmont Stakes (G1). The 4-year-old son of Exaggerator claimed graded-stakes victories in the West Virginia Derby (G3) at Mountaineer Park and Saturday's Harlan's Holiday (G3) at Gulfstream Park.
Steve Moger's Stiletto Boy, a multiple Grade 1 stakes-placed son of Shackleford who finished third in last year's Pegasus World Cup, made this year's invitation list after winning the Californian (G2) this season for trainer Ed Moger Jr.
Simplification is another on the Pegasus World Cup invitation list with experience at Gulfstream, having captured the 2022 Fountain of Youth (G2) at Gulfstream. The Antonio Sano-trained son of Not This Time finished third in Saturday's Harlan's Holiday.
Last Samurai, who captured the Oaklawn Handicap (G2), represents Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas on the Pegasus World Cup invitational list.
Eight horses are on the list of reserve invitees, who may be invited to run in the Pegasus World Cup in the event one or more of the 12 invitees do not enter.
* Barber Road, the runner-up to Cyberknife in the Arkansas Derby (G1);
* Mark Breen's Endorsed, who finished fourth in last year's Pegasus World Cup;
* Hoist the Gold, who finished third in the Malibu (G1) at Santa Anita last time out;
* Law Professor, who finished second behind Life Is Good in the Woodward (G1);
* Muad'dib, a winner of 12 of 14 career starts and second-place finisher in the Charles Town Classic (G2);
* Pappacap, a multiple Grade 1 stakes-placed son of Gun Runner trained by Hall of Famer Mark Casse;
* Pioneer of Medina, a runner-up to Skippylongstocking in the Harlan's Holiday for Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher, who saddled Life Is Good for a victory in last year's Pegasus World Cup;
* Ridin With Biden, who won the Greenwood Cup (G3) at Parx.
Cyberknife Trains For Career Finale in Pegasus World Cup
DEC 29 - Gold Square's dual Grade 1-winning multi-millionaire Cyberknife continues to train forwardly as he prepares for his anticipated career finale in the $3 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1) Jan. 28 at Gulfstream Park.
By Gun Runner, the 2017 Horse of the Year who capped his career with a victory in the 2018 Pegasus, the 3-year-old Cyberknife is scheduled to begin stud duty at Spendthrift Farm in Lexington, Ky. in 2023.
"We have the Pegasus circled for Cyberknife right now," Cox said. "He's got a few more works in front of him, but he's doing great, he really is."
Cyberknife has breezed three times since joining Cox's string at Fair Grounds following a head loss to Cody's Wish in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (G1) Nov. 5 at Keeneland, most recently going a half-mile in 49.20 seconds Dec. 24 to rank eighth of 23 horses at the distance.
"I thought he ran big in the Breeders' Cup and he's done well since then," Cox said. "He's had a couple good works here at the Fair Grounds. He'll do all of his works here. If all goes well, we'll ship to Gulfstream the week of the race."
Cyberknife has earned $2,087,520 in purses from 12 lifetime starts. He has notched wins this year in the Arkansas Derby (G1), Haskell (G1) and Matt Winn (G3) while running second in the Travers (G1) and third in the Pennsylvania Derby (G1).
Cox won the Pegasus in 2021 with Knicks Go, who would go on to be voted champion older male and Horse of the Year. Knicks Go ran second in the 2022 Pegasus before launching his stud career.
Spendthrift acquired the breeding rights to Cyberknife from owner Al Gold after the colt won the Haskell July 18, his most recent win. The Haskell, like the Pegasus, is contested at 1 1/8 miles.
"He's been great," Cox said. "Obviously, he's going to stud after the Pegasus. We've had him for the past year and a half and he's been very good to us. Hopefully, we can end up on a good note."
The Pegasus for 4-year-olds and up is one of eight stakes, seven graded, worth $5.3 million in purses on the Pegasus World Cup program, including the $1 million Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational (G1) and $500,000 Pegasus Filly & Mare Turf Invitational (G3).

White Abarrio Prepping For Pegasus World Cup
DEC 30 - White Abarrio tuned up Friday morning at Gulfstream Park for a planned start Jan. 28 in the Grade 1, $3 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1), breezing a half-mile in 48.31 seconds.
The workout was the second for this year's Florida Derby (G1) winner since his third-place finish in the Dec. 3 Cigar Mile Handicap (G1) at Aqueduct. Exercise rider Vicente Gudiel was aboard.
"He worked very well this morning, and he put a lot of energy in his gallop-out," trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. said.
Owned by C2 Racing Stable and La Milagrosa Stable, White Abarrio also won the Holy Bull (G3) at Gulfstream prior to his Florida Derby score and then finished a troubled 10th in the Kentucky Derby (G1).
The son of Race Day pleased his trainer with his physical presence lately.
"He's filled out a little bit. He looks really well right now. We're really happy with the way he is right now from a weight standpoint," Joseph said. "The confidence level in him is very high right now. It feeds off the horse and the energy he gives us back. Everything we're observing is positive."
