Another weekend of graded stakes action has come and gone. Let's focus on the nine races that took place at Colonial Downs, Delaware Park, Del Mar, Saratoga and Woodbine over the weekend. As per usual there were some upsets, some overwhelming favorites that did what they were expected to do and there were some top performers that proved their worth during another packed weekend of graded stakes action.
Las Vegas, NV - The Grade 2 Sanford Stakes comes our way this Sunday, July 22nd from Saratoga Race Course in upstate New York. Two year olds will be featured on Saratoga's main track as the females dash six furlongs for a $200,000 purse. A field of nine juveniles has been entered for the Sanford including two promising Todd Pletcher colts. Both are eligible for $100,000 bonus as a two year old maiden winner at Belmont Park or Aqueduct that goes on to win a graded stakes race at a NYRA track in 2012.
Del Mar Race Course will be the scene of the Grade 2 San Clemente Handicap this Sunday, July 22nd. Three year old fillies will race one mile on Del Mar's turf course in search of their portion of the $150,000 purse. The San Clemente Handicap has drawn a strong field of eight females to go in race 8 on Del Mar's Sunday card. Post time is 5:30 PM. Three year old fillies will be featured as they go 1 1/8 miles on Colonial Downs's turf track for their share of the $150,000 purse. The Virginia Oaks has attracted a field of seven females for race 8 on Colonial Downs's Saturday schedule.
The Grade 2 Delaware Handicap is on tap for this Saturday, July 21st from Delaware Park. Horses three years old and upward will go 1-1/4 miles on Delaware Park's main dirt track in search of their share of the $750,000 purse. Seven horses have been entered in the Delaware Handicap - a win guarantees a spot in the Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic in November.
